An abdominal ultrasound lets an accredited sonographer look at the organs in your abdomen in real time, using sound waves rather than radiation. Some people have this scan because a doctor has recommended it; others choose it to better understand their health and then discuss the results with their GP.
In about 20–30 minutes, the scan can provide information about your:
- Liver — size and texture, including signs sometimes associated with fatty liver
- Gallbladder & bile ducts — such as gallstones or thickening
- Kidneys — including stones, cysts, or changes in size or structure
- Pancreas & spleen — size and structure
- Abdominal aorta — including its width, which your doctor may wish to monitor
